Previous names
1928–1965   Muzei tsirka i estrady
[Museum of the Circus and Musical Stage]
History
The only museum devoted to the circus in Russia was opened in 1928 in the building of the Leningrad Circus. The original holdings came from the private collection of V.Ia. Andreev, a collector of items relating to the history of the theater, the musical stage, and the circus. From 1941 to 1945 the museum ceased to function. During the Siege of Leningrad the museum was hit by a bomb and many of the exhibits were destroyed. The museum was reopened in 1946 and was given its present name in 1965.

N.B. The archival records of the Leningrad Circus itself for the years 1933–1966 are held in TsGALI SPb (D–18, fond 273).
