The original collection consisted of the papers of Alexandre Benois (1870–1960), the Russian painter, art historian, and critic, who was one of the founding members of the World of Art (Mir iskusstva) association. The materials were donated to the museum by his descendants living in Paris. They comprise biographical documents and literary manuscripts including Benois’ diary for the years 1916–1917; his correspondence on exhibitions and theater performances in Vienna, Paris, Milan, and other European cities (1926–1960); and portraits and group photographs of members of his family. The archives contain documents and other material from the private collection of E.B. Serebriakov (Russia), P.A. Braslavskii, and D.I. Vyshnegradskii (France), children’s drawings from the Benois family presented by the State Russian Museum, and xerox copies of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century documents regarding Benois’ French ancestors. There are also personal papers of Benois' son, Nicola (Nikolai) Aleksandrovich Benois (1901–1988), the theater designer, and his brother, Leontii Nikolaevich Benois (1856–1928), the architect. There are documents from the archives of the Serebriakov family, including the personal papers of the Russian painter Z.E. Serebriakova (1884–1967), which include certificates of her birth, christening, and marriage, her diplomas, photographs of her paintings and graphics, and correspondence with her children. The archives also contain business correspondence relating to the founding of the museum and the preparation of its exhibitions. |
