Muzei sem'i Benua—Filial Gosudarstvennogo muzeia-zapovednika “Petergof” (Petergof, Leningrad Oblast)

History
The museum was founded in 1988 to honor Alexandre N. Benois (Aleksandr Nikolaevich Benua) (1870–1960), the Russian painter, art historian and critic, and his family (of French origin), who had been active in Peterhof (Rus. Petergof) before the Revolution. The initiative for its establishment came from the painter’s son Nicola Benois (Nikolai Aleksandrovich Benua) (1901–1988), chief set designer for the La Scala Theater in Milan, with the backing of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR, the Embassy of the USSR in France, the Consulate General of the USSR in Milan, the Rodina Society, and the directors of the Peterhof State Museum-Preserve. A substantial contribution to the founding of the museum was made by the family and relatives of A.N. Benois living in Russia and abroad, particularly his grandson, the architect P.A. Braslavskii, and the British director and actor Peter Ustinov.
