Most of the documentation found here was acquired from scientific research institutes like the Experimental Design Bureau (Opytno-konstruktorskoe biuro–OKB) and the Institute of Aviation Testing (Letno-ispytatel'nyi institut), both under the Ministry of the Aviation Industry, the Air Force Research Institute, the higher educational institutes of the Iu.A. Gagarin Air Force Academy, the N.E. Zhukovskii Air Force Engineering Academy (Voenno-vozdushnaia inzhenernaia akademiia im. prof. N.E. Zhukovskogo), the Iu.A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, and various public organizations of a military nature such as Osoaviakhim, DOSAAF, and ROSTO. The manuscript fond contains the personal archives of those who were in charge of technological developments for military aircraft and aeronautics in Russia during the years 1914–1915; documents on the organization of aerial communications; draft projects and explanatory information for a number of aircraft designs; and the minutes of conventions held for aviation and aeronautics specialists. There is an enormous collection of photographs (many of them autographed) showing various types of aircraft and famous pilots and events in the world of aviation. There are also photograph albums devoted to the earliest Russian aircraft; the life and work of pilots from the various aviation and aeronautic schools in Russia; the life and work of aircraft designers; pilots in World War I and the Civil War; aviation operations during the World War II; and the history of aviation schools in Russia and the Soviet Union. The museum also possesses documentary films on the history of aviation and space exploration. |
