History
The museum was founded in 1924 at the All-Union Conference of the Society of Friends of the Air Force and, with the personal support of M.V. Frunze, became the Central Museum of Aviation. In 1925 it was renamed the Frunze Central Museum of the Aviation and Chemical Industries, and in 1927 it was transferred to the Society for Aiding Defense and Promoting Aviation and Chemical Development in the USSR (Obshchestvo sodeistviia oborone i aviatsionno-khimicheskomu stroitel'stvu SSSR—Osoaviakhim). The museum once more received a new name in 1941—the House of Aviation, Anti-Aircraft, and Chemical Defense. After its sponsoring organization (Osoaviakhim) was reorganized into the Voluntary Society for Collaboration with the Army, Air Force and Navy (Dobrovol'noe obshchestvo sodeistviia armii, aviatsii i flotu—DOSAAF SSSR) in 1948, the museum was renamed once more the Central House of Aviation, Anti-Aircraft, and Chemical Defense. In 1963 it was renamed in honor of Frunze.
In 1992 the Russian Defensive Technical-Sports Society (Rossiiskoe oboronnoe sportivno-tekhnicheskoe obshchestvo—ROSTO) became the successor organization to DOSAAF SSSR. In 2003 the Russian Defensive Technical-Sports Society (ROSTO) was returned to its former name DOSAAF.
