Library facilities
The Library of IIMK, founded in 1859 under the Imperial Archeological Commission and now officially a division of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences (BAN, G–16), has extensive holdings relating to archeology and related disciplines, including history, history of art, and architecture (209,797 volumes). It includes the libraries of the Imperial Russian Archeological Society, the Imperial Archeological Commission, the Russian Genealogical Society, the Orthodox Palestine Society, and the Society for the Encouragement of Art, along with the private libraries of the director of the Archeological Commission, Count A.A. Bobrinskii, and a number of other important scholars. The library retains dissertations defended in IIMK and other materials of interest to researchers. Among the few archival holdings in the library is an album of 56 unpublished watercolors by F.F. Bagants (1834–1873) with views of China, Japan, and Brazil, among other regions, prepared during his round-the-world trip in 1866–1867.
