The Russian State Archive in Samara was reorganized and renamed in 2016 as an independent federal archive under Rosarkhiv on the basis of the former Samara Branch of the State Archive of Scientific-Technical Documentation (Filial RGANTD; for the Moscow repository, see B–9). Despite its more general name, the Samara facility remains the main federal archive for scientific and technical records, as was the situation before 2016, with its earlier designation as a ‘branch’. The predecessor Central State Archive of Scientific-Technical Documentation of the USSR (TsGANTD SSSR) was established in 1967 in Moscow (according to a decree of 1964) on the basis of the scientific-technical division documentation in the Central State Archive of the National Economy (TsGANKh SSSR, now RGAE—B–6). Most of the holdings of TsGANTD itself were transferred in 1976 to a specially constructed new building in Kuibyshev (after 1991, Samara). The archive in Samara was renamed RGNTA in 1992, while a branch of the archive remained in Moscow and, until the 1995 reorganization, the Moscow Branch functioned as a temporary depository for records, most of which were eventually intended for transfer to Samara (Kuibyshev). In June 1995 the Samara facility was administratively reorganized and was renamed Branch of the Russian State Archive of Scientific-Technical Documentation in Samara (Filial RGANTD), while the Moscow repository assumed the principal role as the Russian State Archive of Scientific-Technical Documentation (RGANTD—B–9).
