History
The museum was founded by the City Duma in 1896 as the Museum of the Moscow Urban Economy, on the basis of a collection taken from the City Duma pavilions and exhibited at the All-Russian Arts and Industrial Fair in Nizhnii Novgorod. In 1920 the museum was renamed the Museum of the Communal Economy of Moscow, and in 1940 renamed again by the Moscow City Soviet as the Museum of the History and Reconstruction of Moscow. In 1986 the museum was renamed Museum of the History of Moscow. Since 1934 the museum has been housed in the former Church of St. John the Evangelist (Tserkov' Ioanna Bogoslova “Chto pod Viazom”), which was built between 1825 and 1850 and is registered as an architectural monument of the period.
        The museum now has four affiliated branches:

        Earlier, the museum had four affiliated branches, all of which are now under different or independent administration:
                (1) The A.M. Vasnetsov Memorial Apartment-Museum (Memorial'nyi muzei-kvartira akademika zhivopisi A.M.                 (3) The A.N. Skriabin State Memorial Apartment-Museum (Gosudarstvennyi memorial'nyi muzei-kvartira A.N.
