The museum, founded in 1905, retains original manuscript and graphic materials (watercolors, drawings, lithographs, and photographs) and scattered individual documents on the history of Russian literature of the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, including manuscripts of literary works and correspondence, engravings and photographic portraits of personages involved with cultural, social, and political movements; photographs depicting events of Russian and world history; documents relating to places where writers lived and worked; and a collection of illustrations by well-known graphic artists for literary publications. The museum also holds a collection of autolithographs and drawings depicting A.S. Pushkin, N.V. Gogol', M.Iu. Lermontov (including almost all of his sketches and portraits), V.A. Zhukovskii, V.F. Odoevskii, I.S. Turgenev, I.A. Goncharov, L.N. Tolstoi, and A.M. Gor'kii, among other authors. Russian literature of the twentieth century is represented by manuscripts of literary works, personal documents, correspondence, and photographs of A.A. Prokof'ev, G.K. Suvorov, E.S. Nezhintsev, F.S. Kniazev, and M.V. Troitskii, and other figures of the literary and cultural world. |
