The museum was founded in 1907 as the Museum of the History of Evolution. Its original holdings came from the personal collection of the biologist A.F. Kots (1880–1964), which had been donated to the Moscow Higher Education Courses for Women (Vysshie zhenskie kursy v Moskve) of Professor V.I. Ger'e. In 1922 it became an independent institution, and in 1939 was renamed the Darwin Museum. In 1995 the museum was moved to a new building specially constructed for it. |
