The sector has a collection of over 5,000 manuscript and lithograph plays, including significant prerevolutionary drama. Some of these came from the libraries of E.S. Rassokhina, M.A. Sokolova-Zhamson, S.I. Napoikin, and many were prepared or issued by private theatrical agencies. Among them are many working copies and promptbooks of various authors, stage managers, and actors—often with handwritten notes and commentaries of actors and stage managers concerning staging, properties, lighting, and textual changes. There are also rare materials from the early postrevolutionary stage, including fragmentary, limited-edition publications, along with collections of newpaper and magazine clippings. As an example of the riches in the library, the collection of S.S. Mokul'skii (1896–1960) which contains over 5,000 volumes, was collected during the first half of the twentieth century and consists of books on the history of the theater, belles-lettres, and literature on art and history in Russian and a number of foreign languages. Over 1,000 books from this collection in the sector have dedicatory autographs by such prominent persons in the theater and literary world as I.A. Bunin, V.V. Veresaev, V.E. Meyerhold (Meierkhol'd), L.V. Sobinov, A.Ia. Tairov, and A.P. Chekhov, among others. The Mokul'skii Collection also includes many manuscript materials relating to the theater. Working conditions: Documents requested from the division are issued in the general reading room through the librarian on duty. Reference facilities: The Sector of Manuscripts and Book Memorials has alphabetical catalogues and card catalogues (of personal names and titles of plays), an inventory acquisition register, a separate card catalogue of the Mokul'skii Collection, and a card catalogue of autographs. Copy facilities: Manuscripts can be xeroxed, but the permission of the director of the library is required. |
