The Library of the Leningrad Division of the All-Russian Theater Society was established in 1936. Merged with the Library of the Palace for Workers in the Arts in 1959, it was renamed for K.S. Stanislavskii. It was then under the Leningrad Branch of the All-Russian Theater Society, and later in the 1980s to 1991, under the Leningrad organization of the Union of Theater Workers of the RSFSR, as part of the so-called House of Actors (Dom aktera). Since 1991, the library serves the St. Petersburg Division of the Union of Theater Workers of the Russian Federation. The manuscript holdings were first organized in 1946. N.B. Collections of photographic materials, sound recordings, and other archival documentation have been transferred to the Museum of Theater and Musical Arts in St. Petersburg.
