The Music Library was founded in 1882 at the same time as the Court Orchestra (Pridvornyi orkestr), the music scores of which formed the foundation of the library collections. The orchestra came under state control in 1917 was reorganized as the Petrograd State Philharmonic in 1921, and in 1924 was renamed the Leningrad Philharmonic. It was renamed in honor of D.D. Shostakovich in 1975. After the October Revolution the library acquired a number of important music holdings from state and public organizations as well as private collections, including the libraries of the orchestra of Count A.D. Sheremetev and the Pavlovsk Railroad Station Orchestra, and part of the library of the A.I. Ziloti Orchestra, along with fonds of the St. Petersburg “Singakademie” Choral Society, the music division of the People’s Commissariat of Education (Narkompros), and the Division for Furniture and Interior Decoration of the City Museum, among others. Later, the library acquired a collection of music scores for symphonic orchestra from the State People’s Home (Gosnardom), the library of the conductor K.I. Eliasberg, the collection of scores for orchestra gathered by the conductor G.N. Rozhdestvenskii, and the book collection of the musicologist A.M. Stupel'. Part of the library’s manuscript holdings were transferred to the Music Division of the Hermitage in 1932, and in 1936 a collection of music scores for brass bands was transferred from the library to the Ministry of Defense and the State Brass Band (which was subsequently disbanded). The remaining manuscript materials were transferred to the State Public Library (now the Russian National Library—G–15) in 1938. N.B.
