The predecessor of the Moscow State Pedagogical University (MPGU) was founded in 1872 as the Higher Courses for Women, on the initiative of Professor V.I. Ger'e, which in 1918 was reorganized as the Second Moscow State University. A pedagogical faculty was opened in 1921, on the basis of which, in 1930, the A.S. In 1942 the State Pedagogical Institute for the Handicapped was consolidated with MGPI, in 1943—the K. Liebknecht Industrial Pedagogical Institute, and in 1960—the V.P.
