Library facilities The library, now officially a division of BAN, was founded in 1831 within the Zoological Museum as a specialized collection of literature relating to zoology and related subjects. Approximately one quarter of its holdings (in all ca. 510,000 volumes) consists of private collections of such scholars as F.F. Brandt, Karl Ernst von Baer (K.M. Ber), A.A. Shtraukh and others. There are also approximately 700 candidate and doctoral dissertations defended at the Institute since 1945.
