Library facilities
The library of the museum was established in 1902. During the 1930s and 40s it was combined with the libraries of the abolished Institute of Peoples of the North and the Institute for the Study of the Peoples of the USSR. It includes the personal libraries of N.N. Miklukho-Maklai, the Duke of Mecklenburg, V.V. Radlov, L.Ia. Shternberg, V.G. Bogoraz-Tan, E.E. Ukhtomskii, and other ethnographic scholars. The collections (116,000 vols. including 53,500 books and 62,500 periodicals)—now officially a branch of the BAN—have extensive reference materials in the field of anthropology, ethnography, folklore, and related disciplines, and include many rare editions.
