The initial predecessor of the present Institute was the Imperial Archeological Commission, established in 1859, under the Ministry of the Imperial Court, which after the Revolution, was reorganized as the Russian State Archeological Commission. On its basis in 1919 was founded the Russian Academy of the History of Material Culture (RAIMK), which, after 1926, was known as the State Academy of the History of Material Culture. It was reorganized as the N.Ia. Marr Institute of the History of Material Culture, when in 1937 it became part of the Academy of Sciences. In 1945 the headquarters of the Institute was transferred to Moscow (see E–2), and a Division remained in Leningrad. It was renamed the Institute of Archeology in 1959. In 1991 the Division in Leningrad was reorganized as a separate Institute of the History of Material Culture. The Institute, together with the Institute of Oriental Studies (now the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, E–30) occupies the elegant New Michael Palace (Novomikhailovskii dvorets), built in 1857–1861 on the Neva Embankment by the architect A.I. Stakenschneider (Shtakenshneider) for Alexander II’s uncle Grand Duke Michael (Mikhail Nikolaevich). The Manuscript Archive was established in 1919 under RAIMK on the basis of the Division of Old Files and the Division of Books, Maps, Drafts, and Drawings of the Imperial Archeological Commission. The Division of Photographs and Negatives of the Library of the Russian Archeological Commission was established in 1918, and continued after 1919 as a division of GAIMK; it was reorganized in 1937 as the Photograph Archive. In February 1991 a burst heating pipe caused considerable water damage to part of the photographic collections. The Manuscript Archive and Photograph Archive were involved as divisions to Scientific Archive, created in 2004 . N.B. The records of IIMK for the period 1938–1968 were formally transferred to the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPbF ARAN, E–25, fond 312, available electronically: http://isaran.ru/isaran/isaran.php?pa...), but remain on temporary deposit in the Manuscript Archive of the Institute itself. |
