Vavilov Memorial Cabinet-Museum was organized in 1979, first as a museum of the history of genetics, and from 1984 as a Scientific Research Division for the History of Genetics under the Institute. Housed in the building constructed for the laboratories of the Institute in the 1930s, it was opened as a memorial cabinet in 1987 in honor of the centenary of the birth of the well-known biologist and geneticist Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov (1887–1943), who directed the Institute from 1934 through 1940. N.B. Archival records of the Institute have been deposited in the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ARAN—E–1, fond 1859, 589 units; 1965–1990).
