History
The Institute of Sociology was established in 1968 as the Institute of Concrete Sociological Research. The Historico-Sociological Archive was established in 1993 on the basis of the Archive of the Institute.
As a result of reorganization the Federal Center of Theoretical and Applied Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Federal'nyi nauchno-issledovatel'skii sotsiologicheskii tsentr RAN—FNISTs) established in 2017. The Institute of Sociology became its department, and the Sociological Institute in St. Petersburg (E–32)converted to its branch.
