It serves as a repository for a significant volume of documentation, including the administrative records of VKP itself, and papers of a number of important bibliographers, who were associated with VKP. The administrative-operational records of RKP/VKP that are designated for permanent preservation for the period 1917–1950 are arranged in a separate fond (fond 2); under special arrangement with TsGAOR SSSR in 1991 (now GA RF—B–1, where the fond has been assigned no. R-8658), these records are to remain in the VKP archive for fifty years. This fond is arranged in several different categories of files in rough chronological order. There are copies of decrees of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK), regulations of the Council of People’s Commissars, the People’s Commissariat of Education (Narkompros RSFSR), and decrees of the Soviet censorship organ Glavlit and VKP itself. There are regulations regarding and/or formulated by VKP and its structural subdivisions, protocols of meetings of its Collegium, as well as its directors and administrative officies. There are stenograms and protocols of all-Russian bibliographic congresses and meetings of the directors of the Book Chambers of the union republics. There are reports of various types, work plans and fulfillment reports, and extensive correspondence files of VKP with scientific and social organizations, cultural organs, and censorship offices under different agencies (Narkompros RSFSR, Gosizdat, Glavnauka, Glavlit, and others). Post-1950 VKP records have not yet been arranged, but will constitute a separate fond in the VKP archive. Also among the unprocessed fonds are records of RKP/VKP relations with the separate Book Chambers established for the union republics of the USSR, and a collection of early materials relating to bibliographic classification. (N.B. The VKP records have some lacunae resulting from a bomb that hit the Book Chamber building and a July 1941 fire. Some of the files were eliminated by an appraisal commission in 1957.) A separate fond (fond 3) is devoted to VKP correspondence with individuals, including many autographs of famous authors, artists, and other cultural leaders, together with some personnel records of bibliographers. A collection of files of RKP relations with Narkompros RSFSR (1923–1924) forms a separate fond (fond 5). Fond 6 constitutes a collection of documentation of V.I. Lenin’s relations with RKP. Fond 7 includes records of scientific societies and exhibitions held in conjunction with RKP, including an important collection of materials relating to the Moscow Bibliophile Society. Fond 8 is devoted to translations of different foreign writings relating to bibliography and publishing (articles and published or unpublished studies). There is also a separate unprocessed collection of early materials relating to book classification. A separate fond (fond 1) devoted to “Personalia” preserves significant personal papers of well-known Russian bibliographers, librarians, and bookmen—N.N. Ablov, B.S. Bodnarskii, D.D. Iazykov, L.B. Khavkina, E.P. Kruglikova, I.F. Masanov, I.Iu. Masanov, N.A. Rubakin, N.V. Rusinov, E.I. Shamurin, S.A. Vengerov, and N.V. Zdobnov, among others, several of whom were repressed under Stalin. Of particular interest are the papers of N.M. Lisovskii (1854–1920), who first set up the Russian system of printing registration, and who also was an opera singer and taught music theory. Some groups of personal papers date back to the late nineteenth century and include collected materials from earlier periods that were collected by the individual concerned. For example there is a detailed “Catalogue de la Bibliothéque du Feld-Marechal Prince Bariatinskii“ (mid-late 19th c.). Fond 1 also includes a collection of papers related to regional bibliography (1930s–1940s). Reference facilities: Opisi prepared for the processed fonds are available to researchers. A detailed opis' has been compiled for VKP administrative records to be kept permanently from the period 1917–1950 (fond 2) (see c–336), which includes citations to related documentation from other archives including TsGAOR SSSR and TsGA RSFSR (now GA RF—B–1). Opisi have likewise been prepared for the various groups of personal papers of bibliographers and bookmen, which comprise separate opisi within fond 1. |
