History
The museum was founded in 1923 on the basis of the archive and museum division of the theater, which itself had been formed in 1922. The exhibits opened in 1925 in the historical building of MKhAT, but in 1939 the museum received separate premises in the four-story building next to the theater. In 1943 it was given nationwide recognition (soiuznoe znachenie) and received the name of the Museum of the A.M. Gorkii Moscow Academic Art Theater of the USSR. Since January, 1949, the museum has operated independently of the theater. Its various divisions were organized in 1969, including the Divisions for Archival Fonds and Pictorial Fonds.
The museum has two affiliated branches honoring the cofounders of the theater, neither of which retain significant archival materials, since most documentation is housed in the main museum building. There are, nevertheless, some documents displayed and some books there with dedicatory inscriptions, as well as some correspondence and photographs:
                (1) The K.S. Stanislavskii House-Museum (Dom-muzei K.S. Stanislavskogo) was opened in 1948 to honor the actor and theater director Konstantin Sergeevich Stanislavskii (pseud. of Alekseev, 1863–1938). The museum displays many original archival materials and memorabilia relating to the life and theatrical career of Stanislavskii, including graphic materials and part of his library with many autographed books.                 (2) The Nemirovich-Danchenko Apartment-Museum (Muzei-kvartira V.I. Nemirovicha-Danchenko) was founded in 1943 to honor the playwright and director Vladimir Ivanovich Nemirovich-Danchenko (1858–1943) in the apartment where he lived from 1938–1943. The museum houses many original documents, letters, photographs, and autographed books. (125009, Moscow, Glinishchevskii per. [former ul.
