Here are the records of the Moscow Academic Art Theater and its studios (since 1898); the Chekhov Academic Art Theater (MKhAT im. Chekhova); the Gor'kii Academic Art Theater (Moskovskii Khudozhestvennyi Akademicheskii Teatr im. Gor'kogo); and the Nemirovich-Danchenko Studio School (Shkola-studiia im. V.I. Nemirovicha-Danchenko pri MKhAT im. Chekhova). There are separate fonds with documents pertaining to successive MKhAT seasons (Sezony MKhAT) (starting in 1897) and the MKhAT Performances Fond (Fond spektaklei MKhAT), which document new productions, along with plays that have formed part of the MKhAT repertory since it was opened in 1898. These include many authors’, directors’, actors’, and censors’ copies of scripts and promptbooks. A large part of the archival materials contained in this division is made up of collections of personal papers. These include the fonds of MKhAT founders K.S. Stanislavskii and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, the majority of whose personal papers are located here. There are also extensive personal papers of a number of actors and actresses like V.I. Kachalov (pseud. of Shverubovich), O.L. Knipper-Chekhova, A.P. Ktorov, B.N. Livanov, and I.M. Moskvin, as well as other persons who took a prominent part in the work of MKhAT. There are personal papers of the director and actor V.E. Meyerhold (Meierkhol'd), the writer, M.A. Bulgakov, and the artists M.V. Dobuzhinskii and V.A. Simov. Reference facilities: There are inventories for all fonds that have been arranged, as well as card inventories, card catalogues, and a catalogue of personal names for part of the fonds of personal papers. There are card catalogues covering MKhAT productions and the actors, directors, and other theater workers back to 1898. Separate card catalogues are being prepared covering MKhAT productions and rehearsals, copies of the scripts and promptbooks of plays held in the archive, and for the theater tours. |
