History
The Andrei Sakharov Public Center and Museum was opened on 21 May 1996, honoring the 75th birthday of the eminent physicist and human-rights leader Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov (1921–1989). It takes as its name the title of Sakharov’s 1975 lecture as Nobel laureate. Two years earlier the archive was opened in May 1994, and it is now housed in the same building with the museum and provides materials for the museum exhibits, relating to the history of political repression and the life and activities of Sakharov, among other related subjects.
The Center, Museum, and the Archive are under the direction of Public Commission to Perpetuate the Memory of Sakharov—the Andrei Sakharov Fund, which is registered with the Ministry of Justice of Russia as an independent nongovernmental international organization. Funding comes from a number of sources including the National Endowment for Democracy (USA) and the Russian philanthropist E. Gurevich.
