History
The museum was founded in 1964 by the State Committee for Construction (sometimes translated Civil Engineering) (Gosudarstvennyi komitet po delam stroitel'stva—Gosstroi SSSR) as the result of the consolidation of the Scientific Research Museum of Architecture under the Academy of Construction and Architecture of the USSR with the A.V. Shchusev State Museum of Russian Architecture, which was founded in 1945.
Since the merger the museum had a branch in the Donskoi Monastery (founded in 1591 by Tsar Fedor Ioannovich), where most of the manuscript materials (acquired with the Gosstroi) were held. In 1993, after the monastery was returned to the Church, the museum branch there was closed, and the manuscript collections were moved to the main building.
In January 1995 the museum was added to the federal register of the most valuable monuments of the cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation.
The Museum has a branch: State Museum of Kostantin and Viktor Mel'nikovy http://muar.ru/dom-melnikova.
