This division contains hand-drawn portraits of Russian and foreign actors and actresses together with sketches of stage sets and performers made during performances, and other products of theater decorative art. The art of stage designing is represented here by the original work of Giuseppe Valeriani, Antonio Canoppi, Antonio and Carlo Bibiena-Galli, and Pietro Gottardo di Gonzaga for plays performed at the Mariinskii Theater during the eighteenth century, and a collection of studies by Alfred Roller for the first performance of Glinka’s opera “Ruslan and Ludmilla.” There are also original autograph albums of graphic works by Alfred Roller, M.A. Shishkov, F.I. Stravinskii, and M.M. Fokin (Michel Fokine).
The largest collection of materials from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries includes stage set designs by Léon Bakst (pseud. of L.S. Rozenberg), Alexandre Benois (A.N. Benua), K.A. Korovin, and S.Iu. Sudeikin, as well as those from the postrevolutionary period by N.P. Akimov, T.G. Bruni, and N.I. Al'tman, among others. Contemporary set designers are widelyrepresented, together with theater caricatures and portraits of prominent figures in the theater world.
This division contains printed graphics including color and black-and-white portraits of theater personalities; costume designs; stage sets from plays; genre-painting; pictures of national festivities and customs; and illustrations of theater architecture in both Europe and Russia. The portraits include those of such prominent figures as ballerina A.I. Istomina and the Soviet actress A.O. Stepanova; directors K.A. Kavos and A.N. Verstovskii; and composers M.I.Glinka and P.I. Tchaikovsky (Chaikovskii), to name only a few. An album which once belonged to ballet-master M.M. Fokin (Michel Fokine) contains engravings of medieval dancing, fine arts, and objects of architectural interest. The V.V. Protopopov Collection contains graphic material on Russian folkfestivities, scenes from operas and ballets, and costume designs.
