It holds materials on the history of military engineering and the Corps of Engineers, on types of equipment employed by the engineers, and on military operations from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. There is documentation relating to many fortresses, arsenals, and military factories, with documents, diagrams, plans and technical drawings showing fortifications and defense works in use in Russia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. There are personal papers of a number of prominent military engineers, technicians, and lecturers at the Nicholas Engineering Academy (from 1918—the V.V. Kuibyshev Military Engineering Academy [Voenno-inzhenernaia akademiia im. V.V. Kuibysheva]), including those of General K.A. Shil'der (Schilder) (1786–1854), the engineer and composer Major-General César Cui (Ts.A. Kiui) (1835–1918), Lieutenant-General K.I. Velichko (1856–1927), the professor and doctor of technical sciences, Lieutenant-General V.V. Iakovlev (1871–1945), Lieutenant-General D.M. Karbyshev (1880–1945), Colonel of the Engineers V.F. Shperk (1895–1978), Lieutenant-General and doctor of technical sciences S.A. Khmel'kov (1879–1945), and Major-General M.S. Ovchinnikov (1889–1963). Among graphic materials there is an album of miniature watercolors entitled (in Russian) “A Collection of Plans of Fortresses on the Borders of the Russian Empire, Accompanied by Descriptions and Pointers Showing Permanent Gun Emplacements and the Deployment of Garrisons, with an Appended General Map and the Line Installations as of 1792,” which was presented to Catherine the Great. Reference facilities: There is an unpublished catalogue of the engineering documentation, “Katalog inzhenerno-dokumental'nogo fonda russkoi armii” (1992), and reference card catalogues for the documents relating to the military operations of the Soviet Army engineering units (1989). A computerized database is being established for the division holdings. |
