Established in 1783 as a library of the Teachers’ Seminary in St. Petersburg under the Main People’s Higher School, in 1819 it became the Library of the Imperial St. Petersburg University, which was founded on the basis of the Main Pedagogical Institute. It acquired the book collections of various institutions and university professors, and also books and manuscripts that were acquired or given as gifts by scholars, writers, teachers, university graduates, and students. Its most important book collections are those of P.F. Zhukov, P.B. Inokhodtsev, P.I. Preis, N.N. Strakhov, and M.I. Rostovtsev, among many others. It also acquired the library and archive of the Free Society of Friends of Russian Philology, Science, and Art (Vol'noe obshchestvo liubitelei rossiiskoi slovesnosti, nauk i khudozhestv), and the libraries of the Petersburg Censorship Committee, the Committee of Foreign Censorship, and the Higher (Bestuzhev) Courses for Women, among other institutional collections. Its holdings today, total approximately 6,400,000 volumes, including 145,000 rare publications and manuscripts. Dissertations defended at the University from the end of the 1940s to the present are held within the main library collection. In the mid-1920s a Cabinet of Rarities (Kabinet redkostei) was organized, which in 1944 was reorganized as the Division of Rare Books and Manuscripts; later suspended, it was recreated in 1956. Since 1963 the division has been conducting archeographic expeditions together with Pushkinskii Dom in the northeastern regions of Russia. |
