It was founded on the basis of the archive and library of G.V. Plekhanov, which—transferred from abroad by his heirs in 1928—includes manuscripts of his writings and related materials which had been prepared for publication, biographical documents, and correspondence, including materials prepared for the unpublished “Marxist Encyclopedia.” The Plekhanov library includes more than 8,000 books and periodicals in 18 languages, with extensive illegal press. Other personal fonds comprise the papers of Plekhanov’s wife R.M. Bograd (including her extensive memoirs), personal papers ofthe revolutionary group “Liberation of Labor” (“Osvobozhdenie truda”), V.I. Zasulich (including documentation on the First International), L.G. Deich (including his writings, memoirs, and other materials relating to the history of the revolutionary movement),and the Social-Democrats A.I. Liubimov (including documentation on the history of the RSDRP), A.F. Bur'ianov, and N.V. Vasil'ev, among other revolutionaries. There are also personal papers of the Cadet P.N. Miliukov, the economists P.P. Maslov and P.B. Struve, and other political leaders. Plekhanov fond (no. 1093)—name, systematic, subject, and chronological; also a chronology of his life and biobibliography of all Plekhanov’s own writings and publications about him (“Plekhanoviana”). A contemporary computerized information-retrieval system for the archival fonds is being established.
