Most of the materials relating to his life and scientific work are from the twentieth century, although there are a few copies of documents from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries which deal with the history of the Sakharov family. The most valuable materials are manuscripts and typescripts with author’s corrections of both published and unpublished writings, which were often published in altered or edited versions (books, articles, interviews, open letters, and appeals). There are also many letters to Sakharov, photographs, and audiovisual materials. Some of the materials from the archive are used for exhibits in the museum. N.B. It should be noted that many Sakharov files, including a number of volumes of Sakharov’s journal were destroyed by the KGB in 1989; a formal report to that effect is shown in the exhibit area of the Archive in Moscow (the figure of 579 files destroyed, including some relating to Sakharov’s widow, Elena G. Bonner, is given there). Part of the Sakharov archive is presently held at Brandeis University (Waltham, MA; archivist in charge—Tat'iana Ivanovna Iankelevich). Included there are materials that were taken abroad for safekeeping during the 1980s, including some copies of documents received from the KGB. Eventual plans call for the exchange of microfilm copies between the two parts of the Sakharov collection in Massachusetts and Moscow. Working conditions: Since many of the archival materials are still being arranged and described, advance arrangements are necessary regarding consultations and copies. Reference facilities: Descriptions and appropriate reference facilities for the archive are in the process of compilation. Inventory (opis') of A.D.
