The Conservatory was opened in 1866 on the basis of the music classes of the Moscow Division of the Russian Music Society on the initiative of Nikolai Grigor'evich Rubinstein (Rubinshtein) (1835–1881), who served as its director until 1881. Since 1918 it has been counted among the institutions of higher education. In 1940 it was renamed in honor of Petr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Chaikovskii). In December 1991 the Conservatory was registered as one of the most valuable monuments of the cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation. A museum named in honor of N.G. Rubinstein (Rubinshtein) was opened under the Conservatory in 1912 and during the subsequent half century gathered a remarkable collection of manuscript music scores, archives, musical instruments, and other materials. During World War II the museum served as the basis for the newly organized Central Museum of Musical Culture, founded in 1943, and which in 1954 was renamed in honor of M.I. Glinka. The museum remained in the Conservatory complex until 1964, when its move to a new location left the Conservatory without its own museum. A new N.G. Rubinstein Museum was opened in the Conservatory in 1995. |
