The MGU archive was established at the same time the University itself was founded in 1755. At the time of the Napoleonic invasion of 1812, the University was evacuated to Nizhnii Novgorod, but most of the archive, which remained in Moscow, was lost in the fire. The archive was reestablished when the University returned to Moscow in 1813. Many of the University records have been transferred to local state archives for permanent retention at various points, but some important materials remain. The Center of Visual Anthropology Group of the Center for New Information Technology (Gruppa “Tsentr vizual'noi antropologii” Tsentra novykh informatsionnykh tekhnologii—TsNIT MGU) was established in 1991 on the basis of the interfaculty laboratory system and educational teaching facilities of MGU, which in their turn, were the successors of the interfaculty kafedra for educational and scientific photography and cinematography (UINFIK MGU). At the present time TsNIT retains the film archive of MGU, which began its formation in the early 1950s within the UINFIK kafedra. |
