Sadovnicheskaia, 41 Opening hours: M–F 10:00–17:00 (by appointment) Transport: metro: Novokuznetskaia Head: Aleksandr Eduardovich Marov Head of the Photograph Archive: Zoia Valentinovna Efimova Holdings negatives—ca. 180,000 (1930s–1990s) The Photograph Archive preserves original and copies of negatives, as well as control archival copies of photographs produced by the official Academy photographic service for Moscow institutions under the Academy of Sciences. These include pictures from activities of the Academy Presidium, General Meetings of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, ceremonies of initiation of academicians, and other scientific prizes, and congresses, receptions, and other ceremonial occasions. There are many pictures of institutes, laboratories, and organizations under the Academy; pictures from ethnographic, geological, and other expeditions; city views and interior shots; photographs of scientific apparatus and instruments; museum exhibits; and documentary materials, manuscript books, documents, and books which are held in Academy libraries and other Academy institutions. There are many photographs of important events in the scientific and cultural life of the Soviet capital, such as first-edition book presentations and jubilee meetings, and other occasions connected with the life and activities of many scholars, scientists, writers, and poets. There are many individual and group portraits of Russian and foreign historical and political figures, depicting scenes from Russian and foreign scientific and cultural life. There are pictures of scientists, writers, poets, treir relatives and contemporaries, and other prominent individuals. There are also reproductions of illustrations, artistic productions, and scientific works. There are also some negatives of institutions outside of the Academy of Sciences, such as hydroelectric projects, factories, workers in cities and villages, railroads, hydraulic and geological excavations, and the like. The list of fonds of the Laboratory is available electronically on the electronic informational system of ARAN: http://isaran.ru/?q=ru/archive&ida=44 Working conditions: An advance appointment is necessary. Space is limited, so that only one or two researchers can be accomodated at one time. Reference facilities: There are alphabetical card catalogues with control copies of photographic prints. There are special opisi for negatives from expeditions and other rich collections. There are catalogues of personal names, geographic names, and subjects, and there are special collection catalogues. A catalogue also remains in LAFOKI for those materials transferred to ARAN. Copy facilities: Photographic copies can be prepared at commercial rates for people outside RAN, although LAFOKI retains copyright to all pictures. |
