The records of the Kurchatov Institute and its predecessors (fond 1) include laboratory journals of its various divisions with notes on experimental work, orders and instructions of the Institute, and materials from conferences dating back to the founding of the Institute. There is documentation on the theoretical and experimental development and production of nuclear reactors, the first nuclear power stations and submarines, the development of experimental materials for reactors, their testing, and use in the initial period. There are also documents relating to the activities of the scientists A.P. Aleksandrov, L.A. Artsimovich, I.K. Kikoin, B.V. Kurchatov, and M.D. Millionshchikov, among others. The personal papers of I.V. Kurchatov (fond 2, started in 1974) contain his scientific writings (articles, reports, speeches, and other writings), notebooks, professional correspondence, biographical documents (questionnaires, autobiographies, diplomas), and certificates and attestations of members of the Kurchatov Institute. There is much correspondence of Kurchatov with other scientists, including the physicist K.D. Sinel'nikov (covering the years 1922 to 1958) and scientists abroad. In addition to documentation on Kurchatov’s own professional life and activities, there are also materials on the early period of nuclear development in the 1940s and 1950s and the construction of nuclear power stations (including the Novovoronezh atomic power station). There is documentation on the participation of scientists of the IAE in international conferences and symposia and preparations for the Geneva Conferences, among others. N.B. Part of the personal papers of I.V. Kurchatov are retained in the memorial Kurchatov House-Museum, which is located on the grounds of the Scientific Center.
