History
The Botanical Institute was established in 1931 on the basis of the combined Main Botanical Garden and the Botanical Museum of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. These two predecessors of BIN, which now remain divisions within the Institute, represent two of the oldest scientific and cultural-educational establishments in Russia. The Apothecary Garden was founded in 1713 by Peter I. Reorganized in 1798 as the Medical-Botanical Garden of the Medical-Surgical Academy, from 1823 it was known as the Imperial St. Petersburg Botanical Garden. After 1918 it was known as the Main Botanical Garden of the RSFSR, and it came under the Academy of Sciences in 1930.
The Botanical Museum of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, founded in 1823 on the basis of the botanical collection of the Kunstkammer, was officially opened in 1835 and, after the Revolution, came under the Russian Academy of Sciences and then the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
The BIN Library was founded in 1824 under the Imperial St. Petersburg Botanical Garden on the basis of a number of private book collections, including the library of the Gorenki Botanical Garden of Count A.K. Razumovskii, along with a number of unique graphic materials of an archival nature. In 1930 it became an administrative division of BAN.
