Although the main institutional records (pre-1953) of the Institute and its predecessor, the Botanical Garden, have been transferred to the St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (PFA RAN), the Archive retains some important materials regarding the Institute and its structural divisions, and personal papers. Documents on the history of the Botanical Garden include a unique catalogue of plants from 1829, construction drawings and plans for the erection of the orangerie and other buildings within the Botanical Garden, and photographic albums of the orangerie. The archive has materials from the All-Union Botanical Society (1915–1932—Russian Botanical Society, and 1932–1945—State All-Russian Botanical Society; website: http://www.binran.ru/rbo/index.htm). Although designated for transfer for permanent preservation in PFA RAN, the institutional records after 1953 also remain in the Archive.
Approximately one-third of the documents consists of the manuscript legacy of eminent botanists and those associated with the Institute—”such as A.A. Elenkin, A.A. Iunatov, A.N. Krishtofovich, V.P. Savich, and V.A. Transhel', among others—”including their scientific writings, correspondence, and other documents.

N.B. Most of the records of the Botanical Garden (fond 151, 1823–1930) and the Botanical Institute (fond 273, 1929–1953) are retained in PFA RAN (E–25).
