Foreign researchers are urged to write in advance regarding their prospective visit and topic of research. Library facilities The library of the Institute was established in 1818 as part of the Oriental Cabinet of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. It holds literature regarding Oriental studies (ca. 650,000 vols.), including collections of rare printed books and incunabula of the fifteenth through eighteenth centuries, and books from the library of the Kunstkammer. There are a number of memorial libraries of Oriental scholars, such as those of N.Ia. Marr, V.F Minorskii, V.R. Rozen, and book collections of other Orientalists, such as Kh.D. Fren, B.A. Dorn, V.V. Radlov, V.V. Bartol'd, S.F. Ol'denburg, P.K. Kokovtsov, and F.I. Shcherbatskii, among others. There is a complete collection of dissertations defended at the Institute since the mid-1960s, and also some audiovisual materials. Accomodations The Institute is prepared to host foreign scholars who are coming to St. Petersburg to work in its collections and to arrange visas and housing. The fee charged for such services varies with the length of the visit and nature of the arrangements. |
