The Institute of Sociology was established in 1968 as the Institute of Concrete Sociological Research. The Historico-Sociological Archive was established in 1993 on the basis of the Archive of the Institute. As a result of reorganization the Federal Center of Theoretical and Applied Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Federal'nyi nauchno-issledovatel'skii sotsiologicheskii tsentr RAN—FNISTs) established in 2017. The Institute of Sociology became its department, and the Sociological Institute in St. Petersburg (E–32)converted to its branch. N.B. Archival records of the Institute have been deposited in the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ARAN—E–1, fond 1977, 729 units; 1968–1999).
