The archive mainly holds the records of the Institute and its predecessors, beginning with 1925, along with personal papers of a number of its members, manuscripts of dissertations, unpublished works, and materials from research expeditions of the Institute. This scholarly and scholarly-administrative documentation (6,498 units) dates from 1905 to 1991. There are some additional administrative records (5,638 units; 1936–1991), including accounting records (815 units) and personnel files of Institute members (342 units). There are also some records from the Institute of Soviet Law under Moscow State University (MGU) (1921–1933).
        There is a collection of documentary materials about the establishment of Soviet rule in the center and local areas (4,662 units; 1905–1943). This collection includes copies of protocols of meetings of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) and the Presidiums of the VTsIK and the Central Executive Committee of the USSR (TsIK), protocols, orders (prikazy), and resolutions (postanovleniia) of the Supreme Council of the Economy (VSNKh) of the USSR and the RSFSR, protocols of the Moscow and Petrograd City Soviets, resolutions of sessions of local soviets, and other materials.
        The archive also has a collection of survey questionnaires administered by the Institute on land and economic relations in the countryside in 1926–1927 from the territories of the RSFSR, UkrSSR, BSSR, and KazSSR. A separate complex comprises materials relating to the projected Constitution of the USSR in 1936 and 1977. There is also a collection of handwritten translations of official acts relating to constitutional law of foreign countries dating from the sixth century B.C. to 1949.

Working conditions:
Researchers are received in a special working room. Materials should be ordered in advance.

Reference facilities:
There are opisi, an inventory register for manuscript materials, alphabetic and subject card catalogues for manuscript materials, and an alphabetic catalogue for personnel files of former workers in the Institute, graduate students, and approved dissertations.

Copy facilities:
There are no facilities for copying archival materials.
