Before 1917, when Karelia was part of the Russian Empire, many of the provincial records of Vyborg Guberniia were concentrated in Vyborg (Finish Viipuri). When the area was part of independent Finland during the interwar period, a Provincial Archive had been organized there, which brought together the records of prerevolutionary Vyborg Guberniia. Following Soviet annexation of Karelia, the Vyborg archive was reestablished in 1940 as a Branch of the Central State Archive under the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the Karelian-Finnish SSR. Following the dissolution of the Karelian-Finnish SSR, the archive was reorganized in 1951 as the State Archive of Leningrad Oblast in Vyborg (GALO v g. Vyborge). From 1964 to 1969 was a Branch of the Leningrad State Archive of the October Revolution and Socialist Construction (LGAORSS). In 1969 it was reorganized as a separate archive and received its present name. |
