About TsGA Moskvy
The Central State Archive of the city of Moscow (TsGA Moskvy), with the April 2013 reorganization of municipal archives under the Main Archival Administration of the city of Moscow (Glavarkhiv Moskvy), now consolidates the holdings that earlier had comprised six separate Moscow city archives: the Central Archive of the city of Moscow (TsAGM), the Central Historical Archive of Moscow (TsIAM), the Central Archive of Socio-Political History of Moscow (TsAOPIM), the Central Archive of Electronic and Audio-Visual Documents of Moscow (TsAE i ADM), the Central Archive of Scientific-Technical Documentation (TsANTDM), and the Central Moscow Archive-Museum of Personal Collection (TsMAMLS).
About the former TsAGM
Known as the Central Archive of the City of Moscow (TsAGM) from 2005 to April 2013 it was earlier named the Central Municipal Archive of Moscow (TsMAM) from 1993. TsMAM had been formed in 1993, on the basis of the Soviet-period Central State Archive of the October Revolution and Socialist Construction of the City of Moscow (TsGAORSS g. Moskvy). TsGAORSS g. Moskvy itself had been established in 1976 on the basis of the postrevolutionary holdings of the earlier Central State Archive of the City of Moscow (Tsentral'nyi gosudarstvennyi arkhiv g. Moskvy—TsGA g. Moskvy), which in turn had been founded in 1963. Before that, postrevolutionary records from the city of Moscow had been held in the State Archive of the October Revolution and Socialist Construction of Moscow Oblast (GAORSS MO).
Today, the holdings from TsAGM, now all part of TsGA Moskvy, consist of the records of postrevolutionary local institutions of government and administration, industry, construction, transport, communications, culture, education, healthcare, and other public organizations, that functioned in or pertained to the city of Moscow. The records of agencies of state government and administration are represented most importantly by the fonds of the Moscow City Soviet of Workers’ Deputies (Mossovet) and the Moscow City Executive Committee (Mosgorispolkom), from the years 1931–1991.
Holdings from TsAGM also include the records of organs of justice, courts, and prosecution. A large complex of fonds includes the records of agencies of economic administration and subordinated industrial enterprises, factories, economic institutions and organizations, as well as trade-union records. Records of public education are represented by the fonds of city and raion departments of public education, along with records of individual schools and institutions of secondary and higher education, including Moscow State University (MGU).
About the former TsIAM
The Central Historical Archive of Moscow (TsIAM), with that name dates from May 1993, when the designation “state” was dropped from its former name—TsGIA g. Moskvy. TsGIA g. Moskvy was itself established in 1976 on the basis of the prerevolutionary division of the then Central State Archive of the City of Moscow (TsGA g. Moskvy), which had in turn been organized in 1963 on the basis of the earlier State Historical Archive of Moscow Oblast (GIAMO). GIAMO developed from the Historical Archive which was initially established in 1925 as a division of the Moscow Gubernia Archival Bureau, which brought together remaining records of earlier gubernia archives dating back to the end of the eighteenth century.
With the formation of the Central State Archive of the City of Moscow (TsGA g. Moskvy) in 1963, the prerevolutionary holdings of the earlier State Historical Archive of Moscow Oblast (GIAMO) were transferred to municipal administration as the prerevolutionary division of the new TsGA g. Moskvy, embracing historical records from both city and gubernia. That division became the separate Central State Historical Archive of the City of Moscow (TsGIA g. Moskvy) in 1976. With the April 2013 reorganization TsIAM was abolished as an separate facility and all its holdings became a division of TsGA Moskvy.
TsIAM holds most of the prerevolutionary records of Moscow city and gubernia, and some from other central gubernias of prerevolutionary Russia. These include the records of agencies of state government and administration, chancelleries of the Moscow governors-general and governors of the city, the Moscow Gubernia Administration (Moskovskoe gubernskoe pravlenie), and gubernia chancellery, the Moscow Judicial Chambers (sudebnaia palata), and other local courts.
TsIAM also retains records of many prerevolutionary industrial, agricultural, and commercial institutions. Documentation of educational institutions is represented by the records of the Moscow Educational District, Moscow University, the Medico-Surgical Academy, the Higher Technical School, gymnasia, and other institutions of secondary education. Religion and ecclesiastical institutions are represented by the records of the Moscow Ecclesiastical Consistory, the Ecclesiastical Administration of the City and Gubernia of Moscow, institutions of clerical education, and many Moscow churches, monasteries, and synagogues, including their parish registers. There are also many records of social, scientific and cultural organizations. TsIAM also retains a number of personal papers of Moscow business and cultural leaders, educators, and industrialists.
About the former TsAOPIM
The Central Archive of Socio-Political History of Moscow (TsAOPIM), was formed beginning in 1921 as the Commission to Collect and Study Materials for the History of the October Revolution. Before July 1990 what was then the Moscow Party Archive was a branch of the Institute of Marxism-Leninism (IML) under the jurisdiction of the Institute of Party History of the Moscow City and Oblast Committees of the CPSU. The archive was reestablished under municipal archival administration as the Central State Archive of Social Movements of Moscow (TsGAODM) in November of 1991 and then renamed the Central Archive of Social Movements of Moscow (TsAODM) in 1993. In January 2005 TsAODM was again renamed the Central Archive of Social-Political History of Moscow (Tsentral'nyi arkhiv obshchestvenno-politicheskoi istorii Moskvy—TsAOPIM). The Central Archive of Literature and Art of Moscow (TsALIM) was abolished in the same year, and 9 its fonds, relating to social organizations, were transferred to TsAOPIM. With the April 2013 reorganization TsAOPIM was abolished and its fonds were transferred to TsGA Moskvy.
The most important holdings from TsAOPIM are the records of Communist Party and Komsomol organizations of Moscow and Moscow Oblast. Records of CPSU ruling agencies are represented by the records of the Moscow City CPSU Committee (MGK KPSS) and the Moscow (Oblast) Committee of the CPSU (MK KPSS), and their predecessors. There are also records of raion Party committees (raikom), Party cell records from local institutions and organizations, and other related local Party organizations. These include editorial records of Party journals and publishing houses as well as records of local CP educational and research institutions.
Among holdings from TsAOPIM are also records of Moscow organizations of the Komsomol (VLKSM), including the Komsomol newspaper Moskovskii Komsomolets and the Youth Tourist Bureau Sputnik.
Since 1992, the archive had started to collect records of other social movements and political parties in Moscow.
About the former TsAE i ADM
With the April 2013 reorganization the Central Archive of Electronic and Audio-Visual Documents of Moscow (TsAE i ADM) was abolished as a separate repository and its holdings became a division of TsGA Moskvy.
TsAE i ADM was established in February 2008 as a combination of two earlier separate archives: the Central Archive for Records on Electronic Media of Moscow (TsADENM), established in 2002, and the separate Central Archive of Audio-Visual Documents of Moscow (TsAADM), as reorganized in 2002.
TsAADM itself dates back to 1976, when the Central State Archive of Documentary Films, Photographs, and Sound Recordings (TsGAKFFD g. Moskvy) was established on the basis of the audiovisual holdings of the Central State Archive of the City of Moscow (TsGA g. Moskvy).
The Central Archive of Audio-Visual Documents (TsAADM) was established as a specialized repository, predominantly for audiovisual documentation from the city of Moscow. With holdings mostly from the postrevolutionary period, the archive received materials from various municipal organizations, including manufacturing and transportation enterprises, and from the editorial offices of Moscow newspapers and magazines.
There is also a collection of personal photographs by various photographers. In recent years the archive has been actively purchasing photographic and video materials from individuals.
Sound recordings include magnetic tapes with performances of social leaders, revolutionary veterans, war veterans, labor heros, voices of cosmonauts, well-known scientists and cultural leaders. There are also recordings of famous actors in theaters of the capital, dramatic recitations, singers, and musicians.
Documentary films are accessioned from many sources, including film studios, such as the Central Studio of Documentary Films (TsSDF). Film footage is available for many important political events, including CPSU Congresses, trade-union conferences, and the work of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. There is film footage reflecting many aspects of the economic development of the city, as well as various cultural, scientific, and sporting events.
The former Central Archive for Records on Electronic Media (TsADENM) was established in November 2002 as a repository for electronic documentation of the Archival Fond of Moscow, including materials designated for temporary as well as those for permanent preservation.
The holdings of the former TsADENM embraces electronic documentation created in Moscow by both governmental and non-governmental agencies, including private organizations and individuals. According to the founding decree it also includes electronic documentation relating to the history of Moscow, irregardless of its place of creation.
About the former TsANTDM
TsANTDM was established in May 1993 on the basis of the scientific-technical documentation division of the Central Municipal Archive of the City of Moscow (TsMAM, next TsAGM, formerly TsGAORSS g. Moskvy). With the April 2013 reorganization the Central Archive of Scientific-Technical Documentation of Moscow (TsANTDM) was abolished and its fonds were transferred to the consolidated TsGA Moskvy.
During 1994 the archive accessioned the fond of the Main Architectural-Planning Administration of Moscow (GlavAPU) and its subsidiary agencies, including its City Historical Scientific-Technical Archive, which had earlier formed a separate depository. In terms of prerevolutionary holdings, the archive has materials on Moscow city planning and construction starting in 1802.
The archive also holds documentation from Soviet agencies involved with construction in Moscow, such as architectural working and technical plans, drawings and illustrative notes, and official documents of the state commission for putting buildings into operation (1945–1973).
The archive accessions project and construction engineering plans, technological documentation, and other scientific-technical documents created by scientific research institutions, institutions of higher learning, and technical organizations, enterprises, and plants and factories within the city of Moscow.

With the April 2013 reorganization the Central Moscow Archive-Museum of Personal Collections (TsMAMLS) was abolished as separate repository and its holdings became a division of TsGA Moskvy.
Its predecessor the Central Archive of Documentary Collections of Moscow (TsADKM) was established in December 1992 for personal papers and related collections, primarily from the postrevolutionary period. In June 2003 TsADKM was renamed the Central Moscow Archive-Museum of Personal Collections (TsMAMLS).
