Gosudarstvennyi muzei-pamiatnik “Isaakievskii sobor” (GMIS)

Holdings

Total: ca. 15,000 units, 1910–1990s
photographs and negatives—ca. 14,000 (1931–1990s); manuscript materials—ca. 500 units (1910–1990s)

Archival materials in the museum are not held in a separate division, but rather constitute part of the Division of Scientific Accession, Registration, and Preservation of Museum Fonds.
There is a special museum exhibition devoted to the main stages in the building of the cathedral, showing its interior and exterior decor and various restoration work—with copies of archival documents relating to the life and work of Auguste Ricard de Montferrand. There are lithographs with the architect's own drawings, including pictures of other churches that preceeded the cathedral itself, as well as visual representations of the various periods of the cathedral’s construction. There are also engravings, sketches, and watercolors illustrating the main events in the construction of the cathedral and showing the damage it suffered during the Second World War.
The museum archive contains documents on the restoration of the cathedral building itself and the two branches of the museum–the Bleeding Saviour Museum-Monument and the Sampson Cathedral Museum-Monument. The archives also hold engineering calculations for metal scaffolding (1912), plans, estimates, the reports of the technical commissions and technical inspection documents on the state of the building, expert findings, and estimates for the restoration of museum exhibits (1941–1983). There are also some materials involving the scientific activities of the museum–scholarly reports and methodological guidelines for excursions, among others. There are photographs documenting the restoration work and the architecture and ornamentation of all the monuments from 1931 to the 1980s.
