Library facilities
A library (now ca. 12,000 volumes) was originally formed in 1782 on the basis of the 33 books in the travelling library of Catherine II (presented to her son Paul Petrovich) and grew to include books from the collections of Paul I and the Empress Maria Fedorovna, along with other members of the imperial family (by 1914 it included 20,895 volumes). Approximately two-thirds of the volumes were requisitioned in the late 1920s and early 1930s, many of which were sold abroad. Many of the remaining volumes were taken by the Nazis during the war. Only a very small part (some 1,200 volumes) of the imperial collection remained after the Second World War. In addition to the manuscripts mentioned above, the library includes books on history, philosophy, culture, and some cartographic materials. There is a manuscript catalogue of the main Pavlovsk Palace library (late 18th c.–1822). (See above regarding other manuscript books from the palace library.)
