History
Established in 1714 by Peter the Great as the so-called Kunstkammer (usually Kunstkamera in Russian), the first Russian state museum, it was turned over to the Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1724. During the 1830s on the basis of its collections, seven specialized Academy museums were established. In 1879, two of them—the Museums of Ethnography and Anatomy—were combined to form the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography.
In 1933 the museum was reorganized as the Institute of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, which also absorbed the Institute for the Study of the Peoples of the USSR. The latter institute had been organized in 1930 on the basis of the Commission for Study of Tribal Structure of the Population of Russia and Contiguous States (Komissiia po izucheniiu plemennogo sostava naseleniia Rossii i sopredel'nykh stran). In 1935 it became the Institute of Anthropology, Archeology, and Ethnography. After the Institute of Material Culture of the Academy of Sciences became a separate institute in 1937, the Institute of Ethnography (IE) was reorganized and renamed accordingly.
A special research group of the Institute was established in Moscow in 1943. In 1947 the Institute was renamed in honor of N.N. Miklukho-Maklai, and it was reorganized with headquarters in Moscow in 1950. A division (otdelenie) remained in Leningrad which from 1950 to 1974 (LOIE) subsequently called the Leningrad Section (LChIE), and after 1991, the St. Petersburg Branch (SPbF IEA). In 1992 it was reorganized into the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkammer), with the status of a scientific research institution. Already in December 1991 it was added to the federal register of the most valuable monuments of the cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation. For the main Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology in Moscow, see E–5.
The Scientific Archive was organized in 1946.
The Lomonosov Museum was founded in 1947, and it opened in 1949 in the building of the Kunstkammer, where Mikhail Vasil'evich Lomonosov (1711–1765) worked from 1741 to 1765. Now administratively part of the Kunstkamera/MAE, earlier, from 1947 until 1993, the Lomonosov Museum was a sector of the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of the History of Natural Science and Technology (see E–31).
