The first volume of the comprehensive guide to GA RF describes fonds in the prerevolutionary division from former TsGAOR SSSR with detailed descriptions of 608 fonds, of which 143 were previously classified. A brief agency history is provided for all agencies represented, and the contents of individual opisi are described for larger fonds. Includes detailed coverage of the police records and Polish-area records earlier described briefly in the secret TsGAOR 1952 guide (b–7).

Most of the holdings listed in vol. 1 now constitute the prerevolutionary division of GA RF. Vol. 2 was originally published in an edition of 1,000 copies with a “secret” classification, but few copies have been preserved. It includes coverage of prerevolutionary intelligence and okhranka records, court records from Polish guberniias, records of “bourgeois” and monarchist parties and other organs, and intelligence and police records from the period of the Provisional Government, all of which are now declassified. XX vek: Dokumenty.” The collection with reports culled from GA RF, RGAE, RGASPI (former CP Central Archive), and TsA FSB (former KGB archive) demonstrate increasing famine due to the speed of forced collectivization and excessive requisitioning of grain for export. The tragic results, as explained in the introduction, came from lack of grain supplies, peasant opposition to the Stalin agrarian policies, and central requisitioning for export in many areas of the USSR—especially black earth regions, northern Caucasus, Trans-Volga regions, and Kazakhstan, as well as the Ukrainian SSR. Records of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SVAG/SMAD)Microfilms of many of the declassified SVAG/SMAD files are now available in the Bundesarchiv Berlin-Lichterfelde, with a finding aid correlating film numbers to the original GA RF records. An inventory of official orders issued by the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SVAG), which should be found in opis' 8 of the main SVAG fond 7317. Because the author did not have the opportunity to verify the GA RF opis' and delo numbers, these do not appear in the inventory. The inventory is correlated with published versions of the orders and with copies available in the Federal Archive in Potsdam (Ba-P). It is to be hoped that once the relevant sections of the SVAG archive are opened for research, this most helpful initial catalogue can be correlated with archival versions in GA RF and that the inventory project can be continued. It also describes a small part of the collection in GA RF (fond R-7030, opis' 1 [1924–1947]), which has been available to researchers since the end of the 1980s.

A detailed fond-level guide to the Russian émigré collections brought together in the former Russian Foreign Historical Archive in Prague during the 1920s and 30s and transferred to Moscow in December 1945 (January 1946) and initially deposited in TsGAOR SSSR. Subsequently, the holdings were dispersed to approximately 30 different repositories throughout the former USSR. The present guide includes listings for over 860 fonds in 17 repositories. It includes full coverage of the archival holdings of the Don Cossacks and the Russian Cultural-Historical Museum also in Prague, which were received together with the RZIA holdings. Of those covered, over 620 fonds are now held in GA RF. Many of the descriptions include data about the date and source of accession to RZIA and indicate related holdings in other archives abroad.
