The Institute was founded in 1934 by Petr Leonidovich Kapitsa (1894–1984), who served as director from 1934 to 1946 and, following his extended stay at the Rutherford Laboratory in Cambridge (England), from 1955 until his death. It was renamed in honor of Academy President Sergei Ivanovich Vavilov (1891–1951) in 1951. Its present name, in honor of Kapitsa, dates from 1990. The Memorial Study of Academician Kapitsa was founded in 1984 in the former apartment where he lived and worked for the last twenty-eight years of his life. The Institute also established a Laboratory-Museum of P.L. Kapitsa in Nikolina Gora, simultaneously with the memorial museum. (143030, Moskovskaia oblast', Odintsovskii raion, Zarech'e, 32). |
