Holdings

photographs—7,500 units (mid-19th–20th cc.); written sources—1,200 units

The museum collects documents on the history of photography, including technological developments, as well as changes in styles and techniques. There are examples of the work of well-known photographers from throughout the world and documentation about them.
The museum has a rich collection of negatives and original proofs, representing practically all stages of the evolution of domestic photographic art. There are some extremely rare examples of daguerreotypes from the mid-1850s. Among photographs from the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, a special place is occupied by such leading photographers as P.P. Pavlov, M.P. Dmitriev, S.M. Prokudin-Gorskii, and others. There is a separate complex of materials and photographs connected with the Russian Photographic Society (1894–1928), including the work of a number of its members—N.I. Babir, Ia.Bulgak, P.K. Novitskii, B.I. Pashkevich, and A.I. Trapani.
Original photographer's prints from the 1920s and 1930s include those of masters of various types—Iu.P. Eremin, A.V. Khlebnikov, P.V. Klepikov, M.S. Nappel'baum, and A.M. Rodchenko, among others. They reflect many different styles, manners, and tendencies, from photojournalism to traditional portraits and lyrical landscapes.
The collection also has samples of author's prints or reproductions of the work of photographers from Germany, Belgium, France, Czechoslovakia, and the United States, from 1900 to the late 1980s. These include pictures by Rudolph Dürkoop, Hugo Erfurt, Nicolas Perscheid, and others.
The museum has a collection of contemporary photographs, again representing a wide spectrum of artistic tendencies and directions in Russian photographic art.
The museum has additional unique documents, such as awards and certificates received by Russian and Soviet photographers in prestigious exhibitions in Russia and abroad.
