The Scientific Library (over 100,000 vols., including 4,500 pre-1917 imprints), in addition to published literature on medicine and especially military medicine, holds many unpublished works of the museum staff, including research work and surveys and catalogues of the manuscript collections in the museum. Of special note are the collected biographies of departmental heads in the Military Medical Academy (18th–20th cc.), prepared in the 1950s (14 vols.); the manuscript of V.I. Shestov’s history of Russian military and naval medicine during the first half of the nineteenth century (6 vols., 1969); and some 50 unpublished bibliographic guides, compiled by A.V. Shabunin and others, to articles on the history of medicine published in periodical journals (19th–20th cc.). The library also retains dissertations defended at the Military Medical Academy and other institutions.


Working conditions:
Books and documentary materials are available in the reading room immediately after they have been ordered.

Reference facilities:
There are subject card catalogues on the history of military medicine, the history of medicine, typewritten works by museum staff, and personalia files of military doctors.
