Access
Access to the archival holdings and the reference card catalogues requires an official letter from the researcher's sponsoring organization or a personal application addressed to the director or main curator stating the subject and aim of the proposed research. Fees are charged for research in archival materials, reference card catalogues, and other reference materials in all divisions and branches of the museum. Museum fonds are available for researchers on Tuesdays only.

Working conditions
There are no formal reading rooms for the archival and reference materials in museum collections, so researchers are accommodated in working areas. As a rule materials are available the day they are ordered.

Copy facilities
Facilities are available for xerox and photographic copying.

Library facilities
The library (ca. 120,000 vols.), which was started in 1907 as the book collection of the Museum of Old St. Petersburg, contains books, periodicals, maps, and audiovisual material on history and local culture.
