History
The museum was founded in 1920 as part of the Faculty of Biology at the Ia.M. Sverdlov Communist University (Kommunisticheskii universitet im. Ia.M. Sverdlova) on the basis of parts of the collections held by the A.L. Shaniavskii People’s University (Narodnyi universitet im. A.L. Shaniavskogo). It was reorganized and opened to the public in 1922 on the initiative of the scientist B.M. Zavadovskii, who became the first director. In 1932 the museum became independent under the authority of the Academic Committee of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR (Uchenyi komitet Tsentral'nogo ispolnitel'nogo komiteta SSSR). In 1938 it was transferred to the control of the People’s Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR. Since 1945 it has been under the authority of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR (now the Russian Federation), although from 1944 to 1953 it was responsible to the Committee of Cultural and Educational Establishments. Its present name dates from 1945.
The museum occupies the building originally constructed in the late nineteenth century for the art collections of P.I. Shchukin, and which in 1918–1926 housed the Museum of Old Moscow (Muzei staroi Moskvy). The museum has exhibitions related to the origins and evolution of life on Earth and the origins of the human species, as well as genetics and the physical development of animals.
