The separate Gor'kii Archive, since its establishment in 1937, is the official collection point for all archival materials and literary manuscripts of and relating to Maksim Gor'kii (Maxim Gorky pseud. of Aleksei Maksimovich Peshkov, 1868–1936). It contains all extant Gor'kii literary manuscripts, drafts of literary criticism and publicistic writings, over 10,000 letters of Gor'kii himself, and over 40,000 letters of his correspondents in the Soviet Union and abroad.
There are also some fonds of personal papers of Gor'kii’s family and close associates, including his first wife, E.P. Peshkova (10,000 units), his son, M.A Peshkov and his daughter-in-law, N.A. Peshkova (1,606 units), his lifelong biographer, I.A. Gruzdev among others. There are several fonds of institutions and organizations with which Gor'kii was associated, such as the “Znanie” and “Vsemirnaia literatura” publishing houses, among others.
